Danforth

Location: Danforth Street, Jamaica Plain, MA

Completion Date: 2017

Client: Mangiacotti Development

Size: 9,600 SF

Located in the Jamaica Plain neighborhood, RODE Architects designed three corresponding masses that float over Danforth Street. Each of the six 1,600 SF units include a modern kitchen with recessed lighting and European cabinetry, three bedrooms, two baths, and two decks. The living spaces are elevated and carefully fenestrated, allowing natural light and floor to ceiling views of the nearby Southwest Corridor.

The form of the development is derived from a creative reassessment of its site context and urban conditions. The strategic placement of the two shifting volumetric forms are designed to react to the adjacent historic row homes in scale, while the larger mass references future development and compliments the busy thoroughfare.

The building’s contemporary aesthetic offers a rich material palette that relates to its immediate context, creating a strong identity along the segmented urban grid of South Huntington Avenue. Additionally, the building widens the sidewalk that runs along the first floor commercial space in order to activate a public environment and increase pedestrian interaction.
