Description

Choice Hotels sought a site-specific design concept for their flagship Cambria brand. The site is a prominent location where South Boston connects to the city center. Prior to our work, an original concept for the hotel was prepared by design architect, VJAA. RODE completed the building as executive architect and developed an interior design strategy that crafted a unique response to the city, the surrounding neighborhood and Cambria’s brand aspirations. Materials and spatial form, light and nature, and the personality of an academic culture were combined to create a gateway moment on this site.

RODE was the architect for the exterior and all elements of the interior design, common areas and suites, FFE, and OSE.

RODE developed a multilayered design strategy that is uniquely 'Boston'.

The building’s form responds to the irregular geometries and view corridors of its site. The interior spaces tap into the architectural language of Fort Point, leading to simple but confident moves in familiar brick + beam textures. Light and nature appear as engaging, active elements in this hyper-urban location in a simple, sophisticated palette of shadows traced over solid forms. Finally, a personality emerges by referencing literature conceived by Boston and New England authors, an intellectual presence that connects to history and inspires travelers in this new space.

The hotel lobby is activated by a custom chandelier installation inspired by the weeping willows of Boston’s Public Garden, in collaboration with Yellow Goat Design, layered over an art projection installation, Lightweeds, by artist Simon Heijdens.
In the guest suites, the use of high-quality materials and the selective application of elements that reinforce the hotel’s larger design themes curates a bespoke atmosphere that belies the simplicity of the spaces.
The hotel also features several meeting rooms and events spaces, a fitness center, a ground floor restaurant, and rooftop bar.
