Description
The Mezz is a residential development in South Boston at the site of the former Broadway Theater. The design inserts 42 units in place of the derelict and unsalvageable theater space but retains the original lobby entry and repurposes it to become the new residential lobby.
RODE also designed the building's interiors, including the theatre space, amenity spaces, and residential units. The design concept was drawn from historic theater imagery of the site and curates an art deco aesthetic in dramatic black and white with gold and brass accents.
The project required navigating a constricted site and complicated parti-wall construction. While much of the theater was unsalvageable, the former lobby space was revitalized as a contemporary commercial space, which also provides a secondary accessible access point to the residential lobby.
